West Baray

Print

February 2010

I went pretty hard-core with my tuk-tuk driver in the three days I was in the Angkor area. On the last day he showed me his home and around some of the places where Cambodians like to relax. There were groups of people all over, having picnics on the beach in the shade and swimming in the Baray. It was cool to see the somewhat less touristy side of things.

Bantaey Srei

Print

February 2010

Bantaey Srei is one of the the most detailed/preserved/restored temples in the area, and also the one where access is the most restricted. In most of the temples you can get right up in them, but here you have to follow the designated course. Not that you'd have much choice considering how many tour groups pile in and out of here every minute with the express purpose of blocking your shots. Admittedly, I have blocked a few shots in my day, but there was a rampant disregard for personal space/view as these groups came through. The one bonus to having the temple blocked off though was that you could get a clear shot most of the time, so I guess I shouldn't complain too much.

Bayon

February 2010

The Bayon is the centre piece of Angkor Thom, one of the main Angkor temple complexes. It is known for the sculpture of faces on all of the towers. According to one book I read there are around 70 faces or so.

Leper King Terrace

February 2010

I almost missed this part while running through Angkor Thom. There is an incredible amount of detail on the inner walls of the terrace, which you would never notice unless you happened to look around a few nondescript corners.

Angkor Wat

Print

February 2010

I spent sunrise plus a few hours here with about 10,000 other gawkers. I was cursing the clouds that morning when I was taking pictures, but I was grateful for it when the sun came out the next day! Though this is the shining jewel of the whole Angkor area, I don't have too much to say because I had only 3 hours of sleep the night before, it was cloudy, and more crowded than rush hour trains in Tokyo.
